A Letter

from the President

The end of the year is a time for many us to take stock of the things for which we’re grateful and to think about our resolutions for the new one. Topping the list for me is my wonderful wife, Tracy, and our six great kids. I’m also grateful for my extended family and friends, a job I love and serving as President of the Face the Future Foundation.

Face the Future has a personal connection for me. Our daughter Zoe was born with craniofacial differences. We feel fortunate because we were able to pay for Zoe’s surgeries and care through insurance and personal savings.

This isn’t the case for every family. Many of them have minimal insurance coverage or are on public aid. They don’t know what to do, where to turn or who to trust.

A family’s first step on their journey to receiving help is often taken at UI Health Craniofacial Center. There, they meet with a team professionals: medical and dental specialists and allied health professionals working together to provide comprehensive care under one roof. This team is dedicated to the care and treatment of infants, children, adolescents, and adults with cleft lip and palate and other craniofacial conditions.

And right beside themoffering help and supportis Face the Future Foundation. We believe that no child born with craniofacial differences should be denied proper care. The treatment and care these children require may take years to complete and only be covered in part by private insurance or public funds, and we are dedicated to meeting this challenge. No child is turned away from the center for financial reasons. More than 5,000 Chicago-area children are helped annually by the Craniofacial Center.

Our daughter Zoe is a happy girl, full of confidence and boundless energy. Tracy and I wish this happiness and confidence for every child. Please join us and Face the Future Foundation in our efforts to change not only a child’s life but that of their entire family. Join us with an end of the year donation and by giving regularly.

Thank you each and every one of you who support Face the Future Foundation. We wish you a very merry holiday and a happy new year.

Toys! Toys! & More Toys!

Thank you to all of you who participated in our toy drive and making it a very merry holiday for our kids. Because of toy and financial donations Santa’s helpers received over 500 gifts to give out to our kids! Every child at the party received a toy. The extra toys are being given out to during the holidays to our young patients who have appointments at the center.

Will you make a special year-end donation of $50, $100 or whatever amount you can afford to help us continue to expand the care and treatment of underserved Chicago-area children seen at UI Health Craniofacial Center?

At Face the Future Foundation, we’re committed to improving the lives of all children with craniofacial differences by creating a culture and community of acceptance and supporting the unique physical and emotional needs of these patients.

We depend on your help and simply can’t do it without you. Your support makes a life-changing impact on the lives of these children.

Your donation will help us continue to expand care and treatment of these children for medical and dental specialists and allied health professionals’ services. Your donation also helps to fund the free-of-charge events sponsored by Face the Future Foundation for patients of UI Health Craniofacial Center and their families.

Thank you for your continued belief in our mission, your friendship and support.

Fabian’s Story

Anchor/Reporter Lourdes Duarte, Photographer and Editor Kevin Doellman and WGN TV spent several months following Fabian Bautista, a Chicago-born teen with a double cleft palate. He has spent 17 years going through multiple surgeries to correct a rare problem. Watch his story here.

Thank you to the WGN TV team for the wonderful story highlighting the work of the UI Health Craniofacial Center and Face the Future Foundation.

Wonder Screening

On Tuesday, November 14, Michael O’Meara DDS and MarCon Communications teamed with Lionsgate to help sponsor seats at an advance screening of WONDER. WGN anchor Lourdes Duarte introduced the film and special guests. WONDER posters were given out for guests to take home.

Based on the New York Times bestseller, WONDER tells the inspiring story of Auggie Pullman, a boy born with facial differences who didn’t attend a mainstream school until the fifth grade. During the first classroom scene the teacher says to the class, “When you have the chance to be right or be kind, choose kind. Auggie’s extraordinary journey proves you can’t blend in when you were born to stand out!

#choosekind

Dr. Patel Pravin’s work on Wonder

The center’s very own Pravin Patel MD, Chief of Craniofacial Surgery at UI Health, acted as consultant to Arjen Tuiten, the film’s make-up artist to help create the Treacher Collins Syndrome* that afflicts Auggie. In an email to Dr. Patel, Arjuen Tuiten wrote:

It meant the world to us that someone who knows children with Treacher Collins Syndrome so intimately could appreciate all the work we put in to make “Auggie” come to life. We hope that its message to “choose kind” will remain with people for a lifetime, although this is only a small gesture compared to the real lives you change every day. We are so, so thankful for the help and info you have given us.

*Treacher Collins is a condition in which the cheek-bones and jawbones are underdeveloped. Children with this condition have very small or partially absent cheek bones and notches in or stretching of the lower eyelids. The ears are frequently abnormal and part of the outer ear is usually absent. Dr. Patel was interviewed by NBC, Telemundo, ABC and the Sun Times.

NBC “Making a Difference”

Recently the NBC 5 Chicago team visited the center to film a “Making a Difference” segment. Big thanks NBC 5 Chicago and Telemundo Chicago Special Projects & Community Relations Manager Carmen Vega, News Planning Director Pam Oliver and Reporter LeeAnn Trotter. Thank you for helping us continue to raise awareness about the center and the foundation.

600+ Smiles Attend Holiday Party

Over 600 smiles were seen at the holiday party sponsored by Face the Future Foundation and Star Events for the patients and their families of UI Health Craniofacial Center. Snowmen, giant candy canes and other holiday inflatables, Christmas trees and poinsettias created a festive mood. Attendees lined up for a buffet of Vienna® Beef hot dogs, mac and cheese, chips, cookies, an ice cream station and drinks.

Extensions Dance Company danced and Sacred Heart Glee Club sang. Lots of fun activities kept everyone busy. These included a photo booth; face painting; art and crafts; cookie decorating; a magician who created balloon animals; and an animal handler who brought a chinchilla, a gold and brown skunk and a parrot for guests to hold. Every family had a visit and photo with Santa and each child received a gift.

It’s Michelle Krage, the holiday party planner and coordinator extraordinaire, President of Star Events and VP of the Face the Future Board of Directors who has been the driving force behind the party for five years growing the event from 200 people to over 600. Thank you, Michelle, for everything that you and your team do to bring so many smiles. Check out all the photos here!
