With a background in sports medicine and patient advocacy, the science and technology behind the services and prosthetics provided to patients at University of Illinois Craniofacial Center got me hooked. I believe that all children should have access to the newest technology and surgical expertise. The procedures are life changing for the children both physically and emotionally.
When I recently was touring The Center, I was impressed with the team dynamic and how the individual disciplines come together for the patient. Spending time in each focus area at The Center, hearing about what they do, and how they provide the "whole" treatment experience made me realize why patients fly in from all over the world to have surgery at University of Illinois Craniofacial Center. Dr. Patel shared stories with us of past patients that he has followed from birth and into adults. Their success stories are truly inspirational.
I believe Eleanor Roosevelt said it best, "You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, "I lived through this. I can take the next thing that comes along.' You must do the thing you think you cannot do." Maybe it's the competitive athlete in me, but I believe that each obstacle we face is an opportunity to be better at what we do and who we are.
